Bavarian Charm & Holiday Cheer: A Christmas Getaway to Frankenmuth, Michigan

Oma's Restaurant, Frankenmuth, MI

Oma’s Restaurant located in the Bavarian Inn

There’s something undeniably magical about a place that feels like Christmas all year long and Frankenmuth, Michigan, captures that spirit perfectly. Known as “Michigan’s Little Bavaria,” this charming town is like stepping into a snow globe filled with twinkling lights, Bavarian architecture, and the scent of fresh-baked pretzels drifting through the air.

Our trip to Frankenmuth had become a spur of the moment idea, especially after hearing how it transforms during the holiday season. With its old-world charm and festive spirit, it’s the kind of place that makes you believe in holiday magic again whether you’re traveling with kids, friends, or just looking for a cozy couple’s getaway.

First Stop: Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland

You can’t visit Frankenmuth without stopping at Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland, the world’s largest Christmas store. Calling it a store doesn’t quite do it justice; it’s more like a holiday experience. Covering more than 7 acres, Bronner’s is filled with every ornament, light, and decoration you could ever imagine.

We spent hours wandering the aisles, picking up ornaments & decorations we didn’t even know we needed, and marveling at displays from around the world. Even if you visit in July, it feels like Christmas morning. Check out their history here.

But you can’t stop at Bronner’s without also experiencing the Silent Night Memorial Chapel just across the parking lot. The world's most beloved Christmas anthem and a monument to God, the Silent Night Chapel replica was constructed in 1992. On the location of St. Nicholas Church, where "Silent Night" was first performed on Christmas Eve in 1818, the original Silent Night Chapel was constructed in Oberndorf, Austria, which is close to Salzburg.

A Walk Through Little Bavaria

Downtown Frankenmuth looks straight out of a European postcard. Bavarian-style buildings line Main Street, and every corner is decorated with greenery and lights during the holidays. You’ll find specialty shops, fudge stores, and boutique hotels that add to the cozy, festive feel.

Holz Brücke (Wooden Bridge)

We grabbed hot cider & mulled wine and strolled across the iconic Holz Brücke (Wooden Bridge), which feels especially magical lit up at night. If you’re visiting in winter, bundle up, the chill in the air just makes the experience that much more authentic.

Dinner with Tradition

Of course, no trip to Frankenmuth is complete without a famous Bavarian Inn or Zehnder’s chicken dinner. Both restaurants have been serving their world-famous family-style meals for generations. We opted for Zehnder’s for the Thanksgiving Day meal and feasted on turkey, mashed potatoes, and all the fixings. It’s comfort food at its finest, served in a setting that feels like Grandma’s house during the holidays. While reservations are encouraged, we were able to snag a table for two after a generally short wait. When dining at Zehnder’s Restaurant, you can also get a glass Yuengling traditional lager from the oldest brewery in America, located right inside.

Shopping, Sweets, and Surprises

Frankenmuth is full of charming shops, from handmade fudge and taffy to authentic German souvenirs. The River Place Shops offer a mix of local and unique finds — perfect for gift shopping or treating yourself. Don’t miss the cheese haus or the local breweries if you’re looking to warm up and unwind.

A location for the Stop & Snap Challenge

On November 28, 2025, a special ceremony will formally begin Frankenmuth's Christmas season. The evening features Santa Claus at Fischer Hall, complimentary cookies and hot chocolate at the Visitor Center, public skating at the Frankenmuth Ice Rink, the lighting of the Christmas tree, and an extra spectacular drone show performance! It's the ideal way to take in Michigan's Little Bavaria's seasonal charm! Frankenmuth’s Chamber of Commerce even had surprise activities for everyone to participate in to win souvenirs, like the Stop & Snap Challenge. Take pictures of your Frankenmuth Christmas Experience at well-decorated locations around town that are ideal for family portraits. Don't forget to #FRANKENMUTH!

We were able to take a horse-drawn carriage ride under glowing streetlights. The sound of laughter mixed with carols playing softly in the background was the perfect reminder of what this season is all about slowing down, savoring the moment, and finding joy in the simple things.

While Frankenmuth offers hotels & motels, bed & breakfasts, vacation rentals, and RV & camping, booking goes quickly. You can check out availability through their website here. Or if you are going on a whim like we did, Saginaw is just over twenty minutes away and offers all the major hotel chains you recognize.

Frankenmuth is more than just a holiday destination — it’s a reminder that magic exists in the small towns, twinkling lights, and traditions we carry with us. Whether you come for the chicken dinners, the Christmas cheer, or simply to experience something new, you’ll leave with your heart a little fuller and your spirit a little brighter.

So, pack your bags, grab your camera, and let yourself be enchanted by the wonder of Michigan’s Little Bavaria.
