Is This Heaven? No. It’s Iowa.

Field of Dreams

There are some places you visit because they’re beautiful. Some because they’re historic. And then there are those places that feel a little bit like stepping into a movie.

The Field of Dreams Movie Site in Dyersville, Iowa, is definitely one of those places.

You don’t have to be a huge baseball fan. You don’t even have to have seen Field of Dreams. And honestly, you don’t have to be from Iowa to appreciate it.

But if you’ve ever heard the words, “If you build it, he will come,” there’s something pretty special about seeing that famous baseball diamond sitting in the middle of an Iowa cornfield.

And yes, in case you were wondering...Is this heaven? No. It’s Iowa.

A Little Movie Magic in the Iowa Cornfields

The Field of Dreams Movie Site is where cinematic history and America's pastime come together in a way that feels almost surreal. You can walk onto the iconic baseball diamond, wander through the cornfields, tour the original farmhouse and, on select days, even play catch with one of the legendary Ghost Players.

The site is open from sunrise to sunset year-round, weather permitting, although the field can have limited or unavailable access for private rentals and special events. So, just like any good road trip, checking the calendar before you go is a good idea.

And that's one of the things I love about destinations like this. It's not just something you look at and take a picture of. You get to be part of it.

You can bring your glove.

You can walk the bases.

You can stand in the corn.

You can imagine yourself as one of the players walking out of the field.

And for a few minutes, you get to pretend that the movie really did come to life.

The Story Behind Field of Dreams

If you haven't seen the movie in a while, Field of Dreams was released in 1989 and stars Kevin Costner, Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones and Amy Madigan.

The movie follows Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella, who hears a mysterious voice while standing in his cornfield: “If you build it, he will come.”

What follows is a story about baseball, family, dreams, memories and second chances.

The movie was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1990 and was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2017 in recognition of its cultural, historical and/or aesthetic importance.

And while the movie is fictional, the field in Dyersville has become something very real - a destination for movie lovers, baseball fans, families and curious travelers from all over.

Walking Onto the Field

There's something about seeing the field in person that photographs just can't quite capture. The diamond is surrounded by cornfields and Iowa countryside, making it easy to understand why this location became such an iconic part of the movie.

And then there's the corn. Because let's be honest, you can't visit the Field of Dreams without wanting to walk through the cornfields at least once! The site's corn is planted and harvested according to what's best for the crop, so the amount of corn you see can vary depending on when you visit.

Meet the Ghost Players

One of the most fun parts of the experience is the Ghost Players. For more than three decades, Ghost Players have been part of the Field of Dreams experience. During select summer days, special events and Ghost Saturdays, visitors may have the chance to meet one and even play catch. And I mean... how cool is that?

Where else can you walk out of a cornfield and suddenly find yourself tossing a baseball with a ghost from the 1919 Chicago White Sox? It's one of those experiences that feels perfectly suited to this place.

The Kinsella Farmhouse

The Farmhouse

The farmhouse is another part of the experience that I wouldn't skip.

The original farmhouse, made famous as the Kinsella family home in the movie, is available for guided tours. The approximately 30-minute tour takes visitors through the home while sharing its history, from its early days as the Lansing family homestead to its transformation into the Kinsella home for Field of Dreams.

And here's something that takes the experience to an entirely different level: You can actually stay there. The three-bedroom farmhouse is available for overnight rentals from March through December and can accommodate up to nine guests. The experience includes a personal welcome from Movie Site staff and a complimentary gift basket. Talk about taking a movie-themed trip to the next level!

MLB at the Field of Dreams

The Field of Dreams isn't just a movie destination anymore. It has also become a very real baseball destination. The first MLB game at the site took place in 2021, when the Chicago White Sox played the New York Yankees. The following year, the Cincinnati Reds faced the Chicago Cubs.

Then, after a four-year break, Major League Baseball returned to Dyersville in August 2026. The Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies played at the refurbished site on August 13, 2026, with the game streaming live globally on Netflix.

And baseball isn't done with Dyersville yet. The Kansas City Royals and Boston Red Sox are scheduled to play at the Field of Dreams on August 12, 2027.

So, if seeing a Major League game in the middle of an Iowa cornfield is on your bucket list, there's another opportunity on the horizon.

2026 Was a Big Year for the Field of Dreams

The 2026 season brought a whole new level of excitement to Dyersville. The site welcomed the return of MLB, Ghost Player events, tournaments and the opening of the new ballpark.

And then there was music. The Velocity Festival took over the Field of Dreams September 4–6, 2026, with Shinedown, Carrie Underwood and Creed headlining the three-day festival.

It's pretty incredible to think about how much this little corner of Iowa has evolved. What started as a movie location has become a place where baseball, music, tourism and Iowa history all come together.

Grab a Bite While You're There

All that walking through the cornfields is bound to work up an appetite. The Field of Dreams Movie Site offers several food options, including The Dugout, The Stretch and an ice cream stand. The Dugout offers hot meals and beverages, while The Stretch serves classic ballpark favorites.

And because no summer Iowa adventure is complete without ice cream, there's an ice cream stand serving Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream from Madison, Wisconsin. I see no reason to argue with that.

More Than Just a Movie Set

What makes the Field of Dreams so interesting to me is that it's more than a movie set. It's a place where people come to remember. Maybe you grew up watching the movie. Maybe baseball reminds you of your dad or grandpa. Maybe you're bringing your kids and creating a new family memory. Maybe you're just taking an Iowa road trip and think, well, we're already nearby... we might as well see what all the fuss is about.

Whatever brings you there, there's something about standing on that field that makes you slow down for a minute. It's a place where people don't just watch baseball. They experience it.

Is the Field of Dreams Worth Visiting?

If you're traveling through Eastern Iowa, I'd absolutely put the Field of Dreams on your list. Even if you're not a baseball fanatic. Even if you've never considered yourself a movie-location traveler. Even if you're simply looking for something unique to do in Iowa.

Because there's something pretty special about driving down a country road, seeing the cornfields and suddenly realizing that you're standing in the middle of one of the most recognizable movie locations in America. And maybe you'll walk the bases. Maybe you'll play a little catch. Maybe you'll take approximately 7,000 pictures of the corn. Or maybe you'll just stand there for a minute and take it all in. Because sometimes the best travel experiences aren't the ones that require a passport or a plane ticket. Sometimes they're right here in Iowa.
